JRI-Poland / Polish State Archives Project
AGAD Project Region #1 -- Tarnopol AreaThe first Region of the AGAD Archive Project is the city of Tarnopol and 10 nearby towns. This area has been designated as AGAD Region #1 or Tarnopol Area. The Regional Archive Coordinator for the Tarnopol Area is Mark Halpern. The following table indicates the approximate number of births, marriages and deaths contained in these registers for the towns in AGAD Region #1. These registers are likely to include vital records from smaller towns and villages that are in close proximity to the larger towns. The period covered by the registers are also shown. In most cases, there are a number of years missing during this period.

Cost of Indexing JRI-Poland has extensive experience processing vital record registers that are indexed. Most registers from Poland do contain indices. With rare exception, there are no index pages in the Galician registers and, therefore, the final cost to create these indices is unknown. Preliminary estimates, based on JRI-Poland experience with non-indexed records in other branches, indicate that the total cost to complete AGAD Region #1 will be approximately $12,250. For details on your town's fundraising target, refer to the Project Status Report. Support of the Project The AGAD Archives indexing initiative, like every JRI-Poland project, is an example of the power of cooperative effort by volunteers and contributors with a common interest. The estimated fundraising targets for towns in the Tarnopol Area and the status of fundraising is shown in he Project Status Report. To raise the required funds, we need the participation of ALL researchers with interests in this area. Contributions should be made to Jewish Records Indexing Poland. Please specify one of the 11 towns of the Tarnopol Region on your check or other correspondence. Read important instructions on how to make a contribution. The faster we complete the fundraising, the sooner the record indices will be available online for everyone to research. As a special incentive, all successful Town Leaders and researchers contributing a minimum of $50 for their town ($100 for Tarnopol) will be eligible to receive a copy of the Excel spreadsheet with the indices for their town.
Current Status The indexing of all records available as of December 31, 2000 has now been completed for Kozova, Tarnopol, Trembowla, and Zborow. In addition the indexing of records for Skalat will shortly be completed. All of these records for Kozova, Skalat, Trembowla, and Zborow will be added to the JRI-Poland database as soon as indexing is completed and fundraising targets HAVE BEEN met. However, all the records for Tarnopol and Podwoloczyska, which is partially indexed, will NOT be added to the Database until fundraising targets have been reached. The Project Status Report will show the current funding needs to meet the fundraising target. Indexing will continue on records for Kozlow, Mikulince, Zalozce, and Zbaraz. However, these indices will NOT be added to the Database until their fundraising targets are met. Earlier this year (2001), 65 books of vital records were transferred to AGAD from the Warsaw USC (local civil registration office). This included the following records for the 11 towns in the Tarnopol area.
These records will be processed by AGAD and be available for indexing in the latter part of 2001. The fundraising estimates for these towns do not include these additional records. If you are interested in these towns, additional contributions will be necessary to index these newly received records. If you are interested in other towns in Eastern Galicia, please see our Phase 2 web page. |
