Jewish and Civil Records for Towns in the Gdańsk branch of the Polish State Archives

JRI - POLAND: POLISH STATE ARCHIVES PROJECT

Indices for previously unavailable records

The goal of the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland milestone agreement with the Polish State Archives is to index all Jewish vital records more than 100 years old in the Polish State Archives that are not included in the microfilm collection of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). Copies of these records are available from the Polish State Archives.

Access the special instructions regarding the order form.
Please read these instructions.

Gdańsk Polish State Archives (PSA) project

As the fundraising target is reached for each town, the data is processed and the information from the indices will become available on-line. The Project Status page indicates the fundraising status for the towns in the Gdańsk project. Fundraising targets will be added as information on the cost of each town project becomes available.

For the latest information about projects to index the records at other branches of the Polish State Archives, read the JRI-Poland / Polish State Archives project pages and subscribe to the JRI-Poland mailing list.

Towns with mixed Jewish and non-Jewish civil records (generally from 1874-1904)

There are more than 200 towns with mixed Jewish and non-Jewish civil records in the Gdańsk archives, generally from 1874 to 1903/5. Download the Excel file for a list of available towns, types and years of records.

Records microfilmed by the LDS: For most towns, the years 1874 to 1882/3 have been microfilmed and may be viewed at LDS Family History Centers around the world. Researchers are invited to volunteer to index the Jewish entries in these records for the JRI-Poland database.

Records not filmed by the LDS: Upon receipt of an enquiry from researchers for one or more of the following towns, JRI-Poland will ask the Gdańsk Archives for an indication of the number of Jewish entries in the specific town's registers. Researchers with an interest in these towns are invited to contact JRI-Poland at Gdansk@jri-poland.org.

Surviving records less than 100 years old are held in the Civil Records Offices (Urzad Stanu Cywilnego) of each town.

For information on the 20th century records available for your town, visit the Routes to Roots Foundation website, CLICK ON THE 'SEARCH DATABASE' button (on the right side) and enter the town name. Look for the town name in the Repository/City column of the search results. There are typically links to lists of available births, marriage and death records for the town.

Note, however, the Routes to Roots Foundation database may indicate turn of the century records that have already been transferred to the appropriate branch of the Polish State Archives where they can be indexed for the JRI-Poland database.
