|Welcome to the Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP vital records
project. This page includes an inventory of the 1870 to 1907 Jewish vital records for
Kremenets that are available on seven LDS microfilms. The records in these films are an
incredibly rich source of information. They include not only the given names of the child,
but also the given name of the mother and the fathers given name, surname and
sometimes his patronymic. Some records include the fathers social class. Some show
the town or shtetl in which the father is registered. This often is different from
Kremenets, but usually is nearby.
The microfilms contain about 15,000 records, mostly birth and death registrations. The records are in Russian and Yiddish cursive writing. The left side of each ledger page is in Russian. The right side presents the same data (sometimes with additional information) in Yiddish. Some years are incomplete or missing. There are about 5,000 pages in each language! Unfortunately, there are no index pages for these records. Look at the details: Summary, Birth Records, Marriage and Divorce Records, Death Records, and Surname List.
The Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP was organized to create a searchable database of these vital records. Translations of the records will be available on-line in the Jewish Records Indexing Poland database. The CO-OP is volunteer-based. Its success depends on your assistance. You can help make the project a success by donating money or by donating your time (or both!). Please consider volunteering for one (or more) of these tasks.
Although this is a volunteer effort, we will need funds to cover the cost of making paper copies of the microfilm records and postage for mailings to and from volunteers. So, even if you cant volunteer for one of the CO-OP tasks, perhaps you can make a financial contribution to help the project move forward.
Contributions should be made to "Jewish Records Indexing - Poland" and may be by check, bank draft, money order, or Visa Card. Be sure to specify that your contribution is for the Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP. Send your contributions or address your questions concerning donations to:
Jewish Records Indexing, Inc.
Telephone / Fax: (301) 341-1261
Visa contributions may also be telephoned to Sheila Salo. (Only between the hours of 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Eastern Daylight/Standard Time, please).
In addition to the vital records, we hope to translate the two Kremenets Yizkor Books, and other documents. One Yizkor Book is in Yiddish and the other is in both Yiddish and Hebrew. We plan to start with the necrology and the Table of Contents. If we dont have enough qualified volunteers to do the job, we will need additional donations to pay for professional translation of some sections of the Yizkor Books. Please let us know if you are interested in this part of the project.
If you have any suggestions regarding this project, or if you just want to be kept informed of our progress, please contact either Sheree Roth or Ron Doctor. Our success depends on your cooperation and assistance. If you want to advance your own Kremenets research AND help others at the same time, please become a partner in this effort.
