JRI - Poland Chelm Shtetl CO-OP Project

Do you have an interest in Chelm? If so, you and your fellow researchers are in a unique position.

Chelm is one of the only towns for which all the Jewish vital records have been microfilmed, including all the 20th century records right up to 1939.

Last year, Shtetl CO-OP Chelm was launched but the work is a major undertaking because there are forty-six (46) rolls of microfilm for this town.

So, it's understandable that getting the project going has not been easy. That's why JRI-Poland is stepping in and trying to help this project along.

While it is the normal policy to insist on the photococopying of all index pages (from every film) for a town in order to
qualify for the "Make your town's records Shtetl CO-OP ready" initiative...we have decided on a different course of action.

This has all been brought about by one Chelmer who speaks the Polish language and who has volunteered to start on the indexing of the records. So, now we need index pages!

We are asking all Chelmers to make contributions of $25.   or more to help pay for the photocopying of the index pages. With 46 films, the target for the photocopying project is $1150. This covers the ordering of the films from Salt Lake City, the photocopying and the mailing of the pages to volunteers.

Our Shtetl CO-OP leader, Aliza Kolker, will coordinate any additional volunteers but at this point, we want to get a head start on the photocopying.

So, now is the opportunity you have been waiting for.

One last thing... when you make your donation, you can pick the decade for the film or films you want indexed. So, if your family left the town in 1880, you can select a film from that time period. If some of your family remained in the town, you may want to choose a pre-war film. This, of course, will be done on a first come first served basis and we will list the films by order of priority on our web site.

Please note that in order to give this project a head start, work has already started on the film for the year 1937 and 1938.

Chelmers, we are counting on you!

Look at the surname list and see if you can find your family name.
